Dirty Work Fishing Team

Team Dirty Work Fishing

Dirty Work Fishing Team is a family based team out of Charleston, South Carolina. The team consist Joe and Paula Wells, Randy and Amelia Wirth and Logan Wells. This is a very well know team in the Southern Kingfish Association where they have had much success. There is not that many teams that is a team that is put together with all family members and that is what makes this team so special, because they have influenced the sport of kingfishing to become a family activity.

Teammates:

Joe Wells is the creator of the Dirty Work Team. He was born in Brunswick GA, but moved around a lot with his family to different areas on the southeast coast. Joe’s passion for fishing came from his mother, who would take Joe and his siblings fishing when she had time off of work and had the money. In 1979 Joe moved to Charleston with his mother on Dewies Island. Living on a barrier island would provide him with the opportunity to learn the waters of the Charleston area and become a knowledgeable fisherman. Joe is married to Paula Wells and they own and operate Wells Roofing and Sheet Metal in Charleston. He has followed more than seven decades of a family roofing business, and has personally been roofing for over thirty years. Joe has built Wells Roofing and Sheetmetal in Charleston to one of the most superb roofing companies that can provide the best service that any contractor can ask for.  He is the captain of the boat and the helps in any area that he is needed. Some of Joe’s duties consist of driving the boat, sabiki jigging, and rigging but the most important of all, where to fish. Joe has been fishing the SKA Tournament Trial for seventeen years.

Paula Wells, also born and raised in Brunswick GA. Her passion for fishing also began at a young age when her mom and dad would take her and her siblings fishing for the weekend. Paula has achieved many goals while fishing the SKA and the US Anglers Trail.  She has earned many lady angler awards and also nicknamed herself “The Chum Queen”. Many fellow competitors say that Paula’s chum slick can be seen from miles away. She is one of the most well known lady anglers on the trail and can be found in the archives of the SKA. Paula and Joe work side by side everyday at Wells Roofing where they are building their business bigger and better every day. Some of Paula’s duties on the consist of prepping the boat, catching bait, angling fish, and she makes some of the best boat lunches you can ask for.

Amelia Wirth, the one and only daughter of Joe and Paula Wells was born and raised in Charleston SC.  Her passion for fishing also began at a young age with her mom and dad. When Amelia was an infant her parents would take her out in the boat kingfishing where she would sit in her stroller and walk around the back of the boat.  Amelia enjoys many outdoor activities like fishing, hunting, and horseback riding. She married Randy Wirth in 2008. Together they own and operate Cainhoy Feed and Seed in Wando SC. Amelia has been fishing the SKA trail since 2000 and she has already followed in her mother’s footsteps by being awarded lady angler of South Carolina three times. Amelia’s duties on the team consists of prepping the boat, driving while trolling and catching bait, washing the boat and angling all the fish while fishing tournaments.

Logan Wells, Joe and Paula’s son was also born and raised in Charleston SC. Logan started fishing at a young age just like his sister. He now attends Collage Of Charleston where he is study to get a major in creative writing. Logan loves to fun fish more than the tournament, but since he was young he has been awarded many junior angler awards in the SKA trail. Logan is now in Australia studying abroad. He was given this amazing opportunity thanks to his mom and dad and the fact that he has held an average gpa of 3.9 his whole life. When Logan is available to fish he does share some duties on the boat such as washing and prepping the boat and catching bait.

Randy Wirth, husband of Amelia and son in law of Joe and Paula Wells. I was born and raised in Huger SC where I followed the footsteps of my father and became the avid outdoorsman. I have enjoyed hunting my entire life, but when I met Amelia and the Wells family I was introduced to fishing.  I have thoroughly enjoyed fishing with them since day one. Joe has inspired me to become the fisherman and the business man that I am. Amelia and I own and operate our business together which is right next door to Wells Roofing. We also live on the family “compound” with her parents and grandparents. One thing about this family unlike other we don’t grow apart we grow together and that’s what makes this team so special. Last year I was invited to fish the pro trail with Jack and Erin Bracewell on Erin’s Addiction Too where we finished 14th place overall and had two top ten finishes against the top anglers in the country. I look forward to fishing with them again and wish them much success in the SKA Trail. As for me I have a lot of duties on the fishing team which consist of fueling, prepping, icing, washing, waxing the boat, throwing the cast net, sabiki jigging, gaffing the fish, running the cockpit, and anything else that I am ask to do.  I guess that the part of being the only son in law.

Articles On The Team

These are some articles that have been posted in Angler Magazine over the past few years!

Myrtle Beach Saltwater Classic 2010

The third place prize would go home with Capt. Joe Wells and his lovely wife Paula fishing on the Dirty Work for a 27.26 pound fish. Also fishing on the big Mercury powered Venture boat was their daughter and son-in-law Amelia and Randy Wirth. This long time SKA family fishing team has a history of doing well in Division 3 competition. Last year they won it all in Georgetown in the Tailwalker event and finished in second place by just over a pound at the Fishing for Miracles KMT. At this year's Myrtle Beach event they ran fifteen miles offshore and started fishing. They caught several small fish but couldn’t find a decent king so they decided make the eighteen mile run south to the Wall in search of a bigger fish. “We were fishing in sixty feet of water when around 2:30 she ate a pogy fished in our prop wash.” Joe said. “Amelia did a great job fighting the fish and as soon as we had it in the boat we made the decision to head back to Harbourgate.” Their king would earn both Paula and Amelia the tournament’s Top Lady Angler prizes.

Bucks Pizza King Mackerel Tournament 2010

Joseph Wells had a 28.41 which gave him and Randy Wirth, Paula Wells, and Amelia Wirth, a first place finish in the Division’s Open Class and a fifth place finish in the Buck’s Pizza/Edisto event. That’s great competition! Joseph has had a great season despite the lack of fish in South Carolina waters this year. Paula and Amelia will finish as Top Lady Anglers in the Division. Way to go, ladies!

Tailwalker Offshore Challenge 2009

Joe Wells Dirty Work Team's 41.40 Big Fish at Tailwalker!

Georgetown, South Carolina -   Some may think Joe Wells was just trying to save fuel, others may think he was just lucky. Bottom line, Joe knew exactly what he was doing in winning the Tailwalker Marine Tournament, one of the premiere events on the eastern seaboard.

The sixteen-year SKA veteran ran 15 miles south and fished the beach. 'It was a post full moon and we've caught fish there before under the same circumstances,' Joe told us. 'It was especially nice because my daughter Amelia Wirth caught the 40 pound king.'

'We were fishing in 35 feet of water, caught her on a bluefish we caught, and on the surface,' he added.  'Amelia hooked up at eleven o'clock. The big king was hooked with one of the hooks of a treble in the back of the fish and the other on the bottom of the fish body. Amelia did a great job and at eleven-thirty I stuck her with the gaff.'

They were at the scale when it opened at three o'clock.

The Dirty Work is a Mercury powered Venture and members of the team were Joe, Paula, and Logan Wells, plus Randy and Amelia Wirth. Amelia was the event's Top Lady Angler and the team took home $12,500 for the win.  Great job Joe!

Fishing for Miracles 2006

Dirty Work is the next SKA boat up, scoring a 30-pounder despite distractions. 'We just got our new boat and got it all tricked out with all these fancy electronics and we can play a movie now on one of our Raymarine E120 screens. On Friday we got set up and had two blue runners out on balloons and a good chum slick going, and started watching a movie,' reported Captain Joe Wells. Long story short it was a good movie, and the kings appreciated the free blue runners. The team got down to business on Saturday, fishing deeper waters, the same spot they found the third place king two years ago. 'We were covered up with cobia, we had three on at once and a fourth chasing a bait.' The team finally got a king to take their blue runner on the long line late in the morning while trolling in 65 feet of water, and Joe's daughter Amelia stepped up to wrestle the king to the Mercury powered Venture. She pulled a 30.60-pounder to the boat in short order, taking the SKA's Top Lady Angler spot in this tournament yet again. Joe, Paula, Amelia and Logan Wells and Randy Worth took tenth place overall with that fish, and are sitting in 11th place Divisionally with only two fish. A strong showing in Savannah could really propel this team up the standings.

Tailwalker Offshore Challenge 2006

Captain Joe Wells and the Wells family on Dirty Work are up next, landing a 31-pounder on Saturday for a solid fourth place finish. Navigating his 26' Yamaha powered Regulator south halfway to Charleston, Captain Joe, Paula, Amelia and Logan Wells and Randy Worth found themselves weeding through sharks for most of the day, only landing one good fish, but that was all they needed. 'Our Lady Angler caught the fish,' beamed the proud father. 'She's been fishing since before she could walk, and been a SKA member for 14 years now,' he continued. Her passion and experience were evident when the fight continued to wear on for the better part on an hour, the king not coming to the surface for even a moment as the team chased her down for over two miles. After weeding through sharks for most of the day and not being able to get an eyeball on this fish, you know what running through the Dirty Work crew's mind. 'We just kept waiting and waiting for it to come up,' he reported, and when it finally did they found Amelia's efforts were not in vain. A 31.12-pounder earned a $4,000 check for this Wando, South Carolina team, as well Top Lady Angler honors for Amelia.

Dirty Work's Amelia Wells fished herself to Top Lady Angler status yet again. She and the team nailed a 30.47 on Friday, propelling her to the top of Division 3 for the year!
